I happened across this enchanting waterfall whilst driving from Kingsdale on a remote back road over the hills to Dentdale. Tucked away just off the edge of the road I almost missed it. Luckily, as I drove past, its shimmering light, glinting on the side window of the car caught my eye. The day had been dull and I didn’t expect to get a decent shot. As I approach the stream the clouds cleared just enough to allow the sun to penetrate the enclosing trees, illuminating the cascade in a magical light. There are innumerable beautiful waterfalls in the Yorkshire Dales but at that moment this was the most sensational of them all.

This delightful cascade is located approximately two miles south of Cowgill, at the upper end of Dentdale, where the valley narrows and the river flows right next to the road. There are several attractive waterfalls along this stretch of the river which is followed by the Dalesway Footpath.
The Sportsmans Arms at Cow-Dub is short distance away and provides another good reason for an evening stroll along this beautiful valley!

Russ was born in Derbyshire on the edge of the Peak District National Park and from early age he developed a deep appreciation of the natural surroundings. Walking in the local countryside became a favourite pastime and in later years this extended beyond his native Peak District to encompass the Lake District, Snowdonia and Scotland. Fortunate that his job involved extensive travel, He also spent long periods in the mountains, working on location in the Alps and amongst the dramatic scenery of Southern Spain. His passion for the outdoors grew, and skiing, mountain biking and rock climbing provided more adventurous ways of being intimate with the landscape. To record these adventures he always travelled with a camera but he never seemed to capture, to his satisfaction, the scale and magnificence of the scene. Russ retired in 1996, and with more time at his disposal, photography became the main focus of his outdoor activities. Since 2005, he has been based in the Yorkshire Dales. Living in this area of unique landscape has had a significant influence on his photography. He perceives the landscape as a complex amalgamation of many individual yet essential components. It is these components that he tries to capture in a style that conveys the mood, atmosphere and character of the greater view. He does not have a traditional or purist approach. He uses digital cameras and modern editing techniques to manipulate images, enhance and emphasise the ambiance, and create a sense of being there.Although not entirely spontaneous, his images tend to be of scenes that naturally and randomly draw his attention. He rarely goes out to photograph a specific subject. He does, however, take weather and time of day into consideration when planning a location. There are, of course, many revisits to subjects discovered under unfavourable conditions. Waiting for the right light, in the right place at the right time is all part of the experience. For him, this is the most rewarding part of the process. It provides time in which to determine the composition and exposure, consider the editing processes and to create a mental visualisation of the final image.

As you know I am a big fan of Peter Brook, at the recent exhibition I saw some of Peters latest painting at £10,000 and theses were small originals

We have not had an original at The Smithy for some time but I am very excited to have for sale on behalf of a client a large and very wonderful Peter Brook Original.

Title: Still Afternoon
Size 28 x 40 inches on canvas framed.
Framed in Peters old frames made from old looms, full of character

It was sold by Agnews to Lazzards bank in London who in later years sold it on.
I estimate it to be around late 60's probably early 70's but not too sure, will show a picture to Peter when I see him to get a more accurate date and location.

The painting has to be seen to be appreciated photos do not do it justice, this early original is guaranteed to rise in value and be worth a lot of money in years to come.

At current market values this painting is worth well over £12,000
The seller is wanting offers in the region of £9000, this I feel is an excellent price and makes for an ideal investment

David Coldwell, the Yorkshire Pennine landscape painter, was born in the spring of 1970. COFFEE!!!
The Yorkshire Dales is a beautiful place to live, but it has one big problem, the lack of decent coffee. Some of you may think, whats he on about, you just add hot water to powder and there you go. No I am not on about instant I mean real quality espresso based coffee. Yes its that fancy stuf that cost more than a £1, but when made right is worth every penny. What gets me mad is the places that advertise real coffee cappucinos etc, they charge you the high price, then give you a cup of basically crap. There is a skill , an art even to espresso making, I could bore you with the full details, but there are many places in the complex procedure to mess up and in a true coffee house only a trained barista would be allowed to use the machine to produce the drink, not some young saturday girl or boy or an owner wanting to make easy money. From the grind of the coffee to the temperature of the milk is all crucial. I am such a coffee fan that I have my own espresso maker in the shop and I have found few places that make a better cappucino than myself (I know self praise is no praise).
There is now a small glimmer of hope in my local town of Skipton with the opening of Bean Loved a small Father and son run business, they seem to have the passion and attention to detail, the beans are not the best I have had, but still a good cup of coffee.
Let me know your experencies, good or bad.

Tan Hill

I have lived in the Yorkshire Dales for around 4 years, and was always a regular visitor before buying the shop, but in all this time never visited Tan Hill. I have read about it, seen pictures, heard people talk about it. When deciding to have a day off I decided I was going to visit. I wasn't sure what to expect and maybe expected too much, you visit the website and read the brochure and it says things like, 'Take a trip on the wild side', 'The friendliest visitor attraction' (sounds a bit like Blackpool) ' The landlady is a little crazy'. The setting is magnificent you feel you are driving for miles in the middle of nowhere you finally arrive at The Tan Hill and the location and views are stunning, in winter must be quite remote. Now when we arrived no fanfare no dancing monkeys or the staff bursting into song, no mad landlady but I suppose it was Friday afternoon and she doesn't come out until night. But my point is the brochure made out it was the best welcome ever and it wasn't ( am I being too harsh) I had a drink and the place was dirty, now some may say that's character, but parts were very grubby and dirty, tables, menu holders, put me off having food, the cheesy signs behind the bar, the out of character and too loud music all add to the atmosphere. I don't like the windows, I know they might have been free from Everest or keep out the harsh wind, but they are PVC, and not in keeping. I really wanted to like The Tan Hill, looking at the notice board they have some good stuff going off, I have heard mentioned they have nudist campers sometimes, now that is brave. It could have been so much more, it did not live up to its claim, it has so much history that it could be really special, I felt a little cheated.

So here we are the new home for The Smithy Blog, not always useful, not always relevant, just one mans ramblings.

COFFEE

So if anybody used to read my last blog may know my current hate is coffee, or more the lack of good coffee. After 6 years loyal service my home Gaggia packed in victim to limescale, after looking at many expensive home models I finally bought myself a second hand industrial ex shop unit. After the troubles of plumbing it in and getting it working I am finally making good consistant quality coffee, and if I say myself it's the best I have had (I know self praise is no praise)

Now my pet hate at the moment is so called coffee shops trying to sell me a cappucino for a few quid that is crap, I will gladly pay good money for quality but I will no longer pay for sub standard espresso. Making a real espresso is an art, a skill that has to be learned, a true shop should have a barista and only he or she should use the machine, not some saturday person with no training. Last week was out for a day, doing some photography and called into Leyburn to a coffee shop there, now all seemed clean and tidy and I could see the proper machine behind the counter, so thought It would be ok to order a cappucino. Now I should have seen the signs, the young girl behind the conter too busy chatting to her friend across the shop about some lads or something, we was told there was no food after 3pm. But foolishly I risked it and I must say it ranks as probablly the worst I have had. On first look it seemed ok raised to my lips for the first sip, to have the skin burnt off, it was the hotttest drink I have ever had, I think she made the milk in the kettle, I could not get my first taste for at least 10 minutes to find a watery bland drink, top this off with a stale scone and the dullest cookie ( I know i'm getting picky now) but I paid good money.

I think I will be investing in a travel espresso machine for the boot of the car.

Still the top for decent drinks in The Yorkshire Dales besides myself is 'Bean Loved' in Skipton. A father & Son team who take it serious. Both seem fully trained and commited, only they use the machine, friendly service even regognise you when you come in, give a bit of chat. Clean, coffee could be a bit more flavorsome for my liking, but always consistant.
